A Life-Size Screen Protector
“So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.” Daniel 3:26–27
I’ve lost it. Dropped it. Left it on top of my car. Drenched it in the incoming tide. And, horror of horrors, heated it up in the microwave in place of my coffee.
My poor abused phone. I’ve certainly earned my spot in the phone “Hall of Shame.” I don’t mean to be cruel to it; it’s just a dreadful combination of distraction and downright negligence.
During an overextended season, I picked up my phone and discovered a huge crack running across the entire width of the screen.
“What in the world?” I said out loud. “When did this happen?”
It wasn’t until the next morning that I had the nerve to tell my husband, Dale. (The previous phone fiasco resulted in Dale braving icy rain for two hours searching for my missing phone on the side of the road after I left it on top of my car. Ahem.)
“Honey, I cracked my phone. I have no idea how I did it!”
My son picked it up and validated my fear. “Yep, Dad, it’s really bad.”
“I don’t understand,” I protested. “I even bought a great case and a screen protector! I paid extra, and the sales lady guaranteed me it would keep my phone from cracking. It’s not supposed to be able to crack!”
And that’s when it hit me.
A screen protector.
“Wait,” I said, hope rising, “can you peel off the screen protector and see if maybe it’s just the protector that’s cracked?”
And sure enough—underneath the shattered layer, the phone was perfectly intact.
Insert giant sigh of relief.
And with it came a second “aha” moment.
This ordinary, slightly embarrassing moment became an opportunity for God to whisper a deeper truth to my heart.
Life happens. We get dinged, cracked, bruised, and bumped. Some of us know what it feels like to be left on the side of the road—overlooked, forgotten, or washed out with the tide. Some days, it feels like we’ve been short-circuited in a microwave of pressure and pain.
Most of us would gladly purchase a life-size screen protector if we could.
But here is the beautiful reality: God already provides what we cannot.
When we place our trust in Him, we are not left exposed. We are covered. Not from the reality of hardship—but from its power to destroy us.
If you’ve ever wondered whether God is present in the pressure, Daniel 3 gives us a resounding yes.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were not spared the fire. They were thrown into it. Bound. Seemingly abandoned. The situation looked final.
But then King Nebuchadnezzar looked again.
And there, in the flames, was a fourth man—standing with them.
“Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” (Daniel 3:25)
Jesus was in the fire.
And when they came out, the evidence of destruction was gone. Not even the smell of smoke clung to them.
That is not just ancient history. It is a picture of divine presence in the middle of human suffering. God does not always remove the furnace—but He always enters it.
That difficult workplace? God’s got you covered.
That overwhelming diagnosis? God’s got you covered.
That broken relationship? God’s got you covered.
That season where you feel like everything is cracking under pressure? God’s got you covered.
The blood of Jesus is not a fragile shield—it is a finished work that holds firm when everything else gives way.
And here is the invitation: you don’t have to carry the weight of protecting yourself.
You can trust the One who stands with you in the fire.
If this truth speaks to your heart today, I want to give you something to encourage you in your journey.
